STUDIO 1A
woodbury university
Fall 2016
INSTRUCTOR: HEATHER FLOOD
Fundamental principles and processes of two-and three-dimensional design are introduced through the real-scale study of objects and their relationship to the human body. Methods of perception, technique, composition, critical evaluation and verbal, written, and graphic presentation are studied through both abstract and representational assignments using various means and media.
The aim of the 1A Design Studio is two-fold: 1. an introduction to the discipline of architecture, and, 2. to provide a technical and ethical foundation for engaging in the study of architecture. We will deploy a range of teaching methods to achieve this aim, including but not limited to: 1. lectures, 2. tutorials, 3. Desk Crits, and, 4. reviews. It is the goal of the studio instructors that each student enter the 1B studio this spring with solid thinking and making skills that allow them to address complex architectural problems with precision and dexterity. However, this goal cannot be achieved through teaching alone. At the collegiate level, students must take responsibility for engaging course material in a productive manner. To be productive in Design Studio, one must participate in all classes, complete all exercises, and dig-deep (both intellectually and technically) into the material being covered.
